The Caterpillar 966A was built from 1960 through 1963.Key attributes of the machine included a turbocharged diesel engine, power shift transmission, one finger shifting controls and 2-3/4 cubic yard bucket capacity. Caterpillars design put the lift arms and hydraulic cylinders ahead of the operators compartment. This allowed the operator to mount and dismount the cabin more easily, kept moving parts away from the operator, and provided enhanced forward reach.
